What Can Cause Blood in the Urine?

More serious causes include kidney disease, bladder conditions and urological cancers. A proper assessment is the only way to determine the cause.

You should see a doctor as soon as possible if you notice blood in your urine, even if it only happens once. Do not wait for it to happen again. Early evaluation is always better, and in most cases the cause turns out to be straightforward and treatable.
What to Expect at Your Consultation
Your doctor will ask about your symptoms, medical history and any medications you take. A urine test, blood test and imaging scan such as an ultrasound may be recommended. In some cases a cystoscopy (a procedure to look inside the bladder) may be arranged.
