Fibroids are non-cancerous growths that develop in or around the uterus. They are very common and many women live with fibroids without any significant problems. However, for some women, fibroids can cause symptoms that affect daily life and, in some cases, fertility.
What Are Fibroids?
Fibroids, also known as uterine leiomyomas, are made of muscle and fibrous tissue. They vary widely in size, from very small to large enough to distort the shape of the uterus. A woman can have one fibroid or several. They are most commonly found in women of reproductive age.
What Are the Symptoms?
Many women with fibroids have no symptoms at all and are unaware they have them. When symptoms do occur, they may include heavy or prolonged menstrual bleeding, pelvic pain or pressure, frequent urination, pain during intercourse and difficulty getting pregnant. Not all of these symptoms are caused by fibroids, and a proper assessment is always recommended.
Can Fibroids Affect Fertility?
In some cases, yes. Fibroids that affect the shape of the uterine cavity or block the fallopian tubes can make it harder to conceive or carry a pregnancy to term. However, many women with fibroids conceive and have healthy pregnancies without any intervention.
Treatment Options
Treatment is not always necessary. For women with significant symptoms or fertility concerns, options range from medication to minimally invasive surgical procedures including laparoscopic myomectomy (removal of fibroids). Our team at MLOSH Clinics can assess your individual situation and discuss the most appropriate approach for you.
