Prostate Cancer: What You Need to Know

A health guide from the specialist team at MLOSH Clinics Abuja.

Prostate Cancer: What You Need to Know
Urology

Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers affecting men worldwide, and in Nigeria it is often diagnosed at a late stage. Early detection significantly improves outcomes, which is why awareness and regular screening are so important.

Who Is at Risk?

Prostate cancer is most common in men over 50. African men have a higher risk compared to other populations. A family history of prostate cancer also increases the risk. If you are in any of these categories, discuss screening with a doctor.

What Are the Symptoms?

In the early stages, prostate cancer often causes no symptoms. As the disease progresses, symptoms may include difficulty urinating, a weak urine flow, frequent urination, blood in the urine or semen, and pain in the lower back, hips or pelvis. These symptoms can also be caused by other conditions such as prostate enlargement, which is why a professional evaluation is essential.

How Is It Diagnosed?

The most common initial test is the PSA (Prostate-Specific Antigen) blood test. A raised PSA level does not confirm cancer but indicates that further investigation is needed. A digital rectal examination and, if necessary, a biopsy are used to confirm the diagnosis.

Treatment Options

Treatment depends on the stage of the cancer and the overall health of the patient. Options include active surveillance, radiation therapy, hormone therapy and surgery. Our team at MLOSH Clinics can carry out the initial assessment, PSA testing and specialist evaluation.
