What Causes Kidney Stones?
Dehydration is the most common cause. When the body does not get enough water, urine becomes concentrated and minerals crystallise more easily. A diet high in salt or protein, a family history of stones and certain medical conditions can also increase the risk.
What Are the Symptoms?
The most recognisable symptom is severe pain on one side of the back or lower abdomen, which often comes in waves. Other symptoms include blood in the urine, a burning sensation when urinating, frequent urination and nausea. Some stones cause no symptoms at all and are found incidentally during scans.
